Watchmen, a twelve issue mini-series written by Alan Moore with art by Dave Gibbons, is frequently referred to as the 'Citizen Kane' of comic books.
The initial Watchmen mini-series was released in the mid-1980's to great acclaim in the standard monthly comic book format. DC Comics has continually kept the Watchmen series in print in trade paperback (aka TPB) format, as well as, the occassional hardcover (Watchmen: Absolute Edition).
After 20 years since its initial publication, Watchmen continues to be a top selling graphic novel, and will soon be the subject of a major motion picture directed by Zack Snyder. The cast of the Watchmen movie includes: Patrick Wilson, Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jackie Earle Haley, and Matthew Goode.
